As opposed to turf, creating a lawn from seed can be cost effective and will produce with patience a turf like finish. Using seed has other advantages over turf. Apart from the cost, there are lots of different mixes for different applications i.e. shaded and hard to maintain areas.
Grass seed is best sown from late summer to mid-autumn when there is less competition from weeds, and the soil is warm, and damp from rain. These provide the ideal conditions for seed germination.
From mid spring onwards is also a popular time for sowing, but only if you can give the new grass plenty of water. Sowing in summer can be problematic especially if the weather is warm. In warm and hot periods it’s unlikely you’ll be able to give the new lawn enough water to prevent it from drying out.
We have over seeding products, treated with kick-off, to increase competition with existing grasses and improve performance in drought conditions.
Prepare the soil by removing large stones and weeds, and then roughly levelling. The soil must not be compacted on the surface, as this will impair the chances of the seed growing.
Fork over the site and rake level to leave a fine finish.
As an option, two or three days before the seed is to be sown, lightly rake in a granular pre seeding fertiliser.
The range of seed mixtures on the site are put together with years of experience and contact with customers, we aim to supply a product to your needs, so can and do make special product, if nothing on the self fits the bill.
Please look through the product descriptions and buy a seed mixture that is right for your garden.
Choose a seed which best represents how your new lawn is going to be used.
For example, a hardwearing family lawn with plenty of resistance to wear and tear, or perhaps a more formal lawn.
The seed mixes will have been specifically created with different species of grass to suit each application, so choosing the right mix is important.
Generally new lawns are sown at 35 to 50 grams per square metre. Most fertiliser and seed spreaders can be set to provide a fairly accurate distribution of seed at the desired rate.
Otherwise you may wish to mark out the area/new lawn with canes or and sow the seed 1m² at a time. After sowing, lightly rake over the area and water.
Wherever possible try to prevent people from walking across the soil until the seed is established. New seeds are susceptible to drought, so keep them watered during dry spells, especially if the new lawn has been sown in summer.
No attempt to cut the lawn should be done until the new lawn is fairly along the way to being established. The first cut should take place when the new lawn is a least 5cm high. If the mower used does not collect clippings make sure wherever possible these clippings are removed for the first couple of cuts.
